In heavily bombed Münster, restaurants served steaming Westphalian meals to all. In Osnabrück's intact suburbs, German civilians thrust food and schnapps on the invaders without thought of payment. Department-store shelves were crammed with linen, stockings, blankets, perfume, cameras. Cellars overflowed with fine French wines.
