...Gershon Legman's obsessive-and useful-collection of sexual and scatological humor. The first 811-page volume by the world's leading scholar on the subject was published in 1968 (Grove Press). Bound in nursery-blue covers, the book is suitable for mixed company. Volume II is clad in outhouse brown and concentrates on what Legman calls the "nasty nasties," divided under the headings Homosexuality, Prostitution, Sex and Money, Disease and Disgust, Castration, Dysphemism and Insults...
...STANDOUTS in a generally fine cast are Davis Goodman as the effeminate Wren and Sam Bloomfield as Mr. Paravicini. Goodman minces marvelously through his role as the child-like homosexual, and Bloomfield, clad in an elegant dinner jacket and bedizened with rings, gives a superbly controlled performance as the uninvited guest. Also good is Mark Howard, appropriately manic as Detective Sergeant Trotter. Nancy Abrams makes a stony-faced Mrs. Boyle, although her carefully accented syllables sound too much like metered poetry...
...bearded young man enveloped in a vast billow of golden silk, perched slightly above the "Mother of the World." It is a difficult role. For 90 minutes he sits without flinching a muscle while, on the tiered stage below, rainbow-clad worshipers from the world's five major faiths parade and pray. Jinns bound and archangels glide. In one sequence, Death, reclining on the Brooklyn Bridge, extracts a cigar from his voluminous cape and looks around for a light. He flicks a convenient jet into the path of another airplane and casually lights the stogie from the crash. Eventually, the great green scaly three-mouthed mumbling monster God shows up for the final summing-up, sends Life and Death off to run another planet, and pronounces, "You're on your...
...social level, the ex-colony's semi-Westernization has left it with some anomalies: tribesmen clad only in "ass grass" (leaves fore and aft hanging from a bark belt) push shopping carts in supermarkets, and spear-carrying warriors in the hills go into their occasional battles with blaring transistor radios strapped to their bodies. On a political level, the latest fad is independence-and not just from Australia. Prime Minister Somare's new government is already plagued by two separatist movements...
