This summer we have a young man, Ray Dooley, clad in a silver body-stocking with ligamental cords running from arms to torso. Dooley moves with admirable lightness, assisted by John Morris' delicate flutes, harp and chimes. His speech, however, is erratic; and his discourse (in a harpy's disguise) to the villainous nobles is an almost total loss. In "Come unto these yellow sands," "Full fathom five," and "Where the bee sucks" Ariel has three of Shakespeare's loveliest lyrics; but Morris' supporting vocalists cannot hide the fact that Dooley is simply no singer. ...former bank clerk named Glenda Brewer-but here male customers are banned from the club during the two-hour show. What they miss is a group of dancers called Fast Freddy and the Playboys, who strip down to bikini briefs and then swivel through the throng, always staying slightly clad and out of reach. "I think they're terrific," says Kay Love, 45, a factory worker. "Men see it all. Why can't the women?" Adds Marsha Stempien, 21: "It's our night out. Puddles. Lots of them. Cops and reporters, too. Not on mention an 80-per-cent complete atomic power plant. But where were the anti-nuclear protesters, the non-violent commandos who were planning to scale those eight-foot tall barriers and stage a mass-occupation...
...Lanka is awakening from a long socialist slumber. The severe shortages of such necessities as cloth, soap and matches that bedeviled consumers just two years ago have disappeared. Sarong-clad peasants fire bricks in newly made kilns alongside their coconut groves and paddyfields. The hotels are overbooked with foreign businessmen eager to add to the growing flood of investment from overseas. Since it overwhelmed the leftist regime of Mrs. Srimavo Bandaranaike in the 1977 national elections, the government of President Junius Jayawardene has been chipping away at one of the most complicated and burdensome combinations of restrictive regulation and high...
