Speaking of James Woods, how invaluable is he to a project like this? Sporting his grim been-to-hell-and-back look, Woods is filled with an inner intensity that boils out onto the screen. Clad in a leather jacket and Ray Ban sunglasses, unflinching when an entire building blows up behind him, Woods brings the necessary mix of swagger, cool bravado, fearlessness and tightly-coiled anger to the role of Jack Crow. It's a good thing, too, since the supporting cast does not add much. Thomas Ian Griffith makes for a striking, if rather dull, villain, leering savagely...
...actress Tegan Shohet '01 artfully portrays Celimene, who deftly manipulates her suitors and rivals with seductive charm. Shohet is probably the least exaggerated of the characters; her calm control reminds audiences that she is running the show. Her greatest exertions accentuate Celimene's sexuality, tempting Alceste with a stocking-clad leg or suggestive negligee. One of the best scenes in the play has Celimene transforming Alceste from an indignant suitor into a groveling wretch. As she humiliates Alceste into wearing a ridiculous feathered band, the audience sees Celimene at the height of her coquettish powers...
Walker caught the shuttle at about 6 a.m. Friday on its second loop to the Blodgett Pool. He joined a trickle of students clad in warm-up pants and Department of Athletics sweatshirts who walked briskly out of the Quad dining halls towards the shutter or their bikes...
...brouhaha is past, Corpus Christi may get its due as one of McNally's best, most moving and personal works. His updating of the Christ story is witty but not patronizing, as sober and cleansing as a dip in baptismal water. Joe Mantello's production--a bare stage, apostles clad in identical white shirts and khakis--is a marvel of spare inventiveness. And the hushed audience reaction at the climax testifies to an artistic success that will outlast the howling...
Heather F. Rose '02 surveys the other membersof the crowd assembled for the Coming of theHour--which featured among the black-clad masses afew trench coats, an unlit medieval torch and oneman in a giant black cloak who refused to give hisname...
