...writes Reader, "one of those remarkable synergies [that] the potato arrived in Europe and established itself as a staple food ... precisely when Europe's burgeoning industries were beginning to cry out for workers." It would be stretching a point, Reader concedes, to claim that the potato set off the Industrial Revolution, but he makes a good case for its role in fuelling it. And what flowed from that revolution is, as they say, history - industrial Europe's global rise (and decline), the catastrophic Irish potato famine and the migrations that took Europe's population surpluses to the New World...

What some claim to be the root causes of terrorism—poverty, disease, political instability, and hopelessness—do not tell the entire story. If these problems offered sufficient explanations for terrorist action, sub-Saharan Africa would be teeming with terrorists, and the 9/11 hijackers would have hailed from the most impoverished sectors of their societies. In reality, terrorist cells in destitute areas of Africa are rare, and the members of al-Qaeda who executed the terrorist attack in 2001 predominately hailed from well-to-do families...

...rights and secularism in the broader context of Turkey’s political climate. Despite the seemingly heavy-handed nature of Kemalist secularism, it is borne of a real danger posed by religious conservatism to the freedom and autonomy of women in Turkey. Proponents of the repeal claim that the ban has cruelly forced women to choose between their faith and educational future. While many certainly claim to, such choices neglect the backdrop of a strongly patriarchal and oppressive religious climate...

...Monday morning, it looked as though the Australian-trained soldier's belief in his abilities had been ill-founded. Reinado was gunned down outside President Jose Ramos-Horta's compound during what authorities claim was an assassination attempt on the country's President and its Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão. Reinado's comrades angrily deny this and say their commander had been invited into town for a meeting when he was attacked, and that Ramos-Horta was caught in the ensuing gunfight. Whatever the truth, the incident left Ramos-Horta with gunshot wounds to the stomach and back...

...recent paper published in the biology journal Proteomics, which invoked ideas of creationism with little supporting evidence for the claim, has caused controversy within the scientific community. The authors of the study, Mohamad Warda and Jin Han, scientists at Inje University in South Korea, used the idea of a “mighty creator” in a paper entitled “Mitochondria, the missing link between body and soul.” The scientists related creationism to proteomics, the study of the structure and functions of proteins, to explain why different forms of life have similar mitochondria...
