...have successfully used Facebook to provide an alibi. When Rodney Bradford was charged with mugging two males at gunpoint in Brooklyn on a Saturday in October, it didn't help that he was already facing a previous robbery indictment. And although Bradford's father and stepmother backed up his claim that at the time of the alleged mugging, he was in Harlem at his father's apartment, witnesses identified him in a lineup, says his lawyer Robert Reuland. ...turns out the 2035 estimate came not from a peer-reviewed scientific paper but from an interview conducted in 1999 by New Scientist magazine with the Indian glaciologist Syed Hasnain. The article, which included a "speculative" claim by Hasnain that the Himalayan glaciers could vanish by 2035, then became part of a 2005 report by the World Wildlife Fund - and that report, apparently, became the source for the IPCC claim. Indeed, supporters point out that the terms of the treaty are far more favorable to South Korea than, for example, the terms of a similar treaty Japan signed with the U.S. in 1960. In that country, the U.S. military can hold suspected...
Like Lewis Carroll, who might have imagined he would be remembered for his book on mathematics rather than the one he wrote for Alice, David Levine assumed that his claim to fame would rest on his watercolors. In an earlier age it would have. His paintings were on par with the very best of the previous century, including works by John Constable and Winslow Homer. But when he died on Dec. 29 at age 83, it was as a caricaturist that he was remembered and celebrated...
