...dramatic, but for a different reason. This time, piles of wildebeest carcasses line the riverbanks, after 10,000 of the animals drowned trying to cross the Mara at the start of their journey back east to the Serengeti. The deaths are natural: each year, crocodiles and the strong current claim some victims. The numbers, though, are bizarre. The migration rarely leaves more than a few thousand dead; but this year, an estimated 10,000, or about 1% of the wildebeest population, were wiped out. Conservationists say the wildebeest simply chose the wrong point to cross the river, one where...
Beats from the Streets Kudos for interviewing 50 Cent [Sept. 24.] He's a force of nature. Learning that his nickname is "a metaphor for change" gives me greater respect for him. But I take issue with his claim that Kanye West's music is "aimed at a straight pop audience." West's hip-hop is less gangsta and therefore softer, but it is also more substantive. If anything, gangsta rap is more pop. I love a good 50 Cent beat, but I keep waiting for him to say something more meaningful. Instead of competing to sell records, 50 Cent...
...disheartened to see your 10 questions for 50 Cent. People like him are the reason I don't subscribe to pop-culture magazines. You degrade your publication when you print anything remotely related to beefs between people who claim to be artists yet who appear to be nothing but street thugs. The more we glorify the gangsta lifestyle, the more it will pervade everyday life. I prefer not to have to bulletproof my car, thank you very much. Phyllis McCabe, HAZLET...
...avoid a lawsuit or public relations nightmare. At the core, student outrage on this front stems from a conflation of the issues—students may legitimately take issue with the nationwide drinking age, but this does not justify their complaints about Pilbeam’s decision.UC leaders claim the University has no cause for legal concern. In 2004, a legal team advised the Council that both the UC and the University incur only limited liability in association with the fund. The idea is that the money for party grants comes from the student activity fee, which undergraduates...
...much of what masquerades as academic freedom can scarcely claim to be the unsightly but necessary garb for those who search for truth. University campuses have been radically politicized, with progressive departments such as the committee on degrees in studies of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies implicitly aspiring to “raise consciousness” and produce the next cadre of leftist activists. Outside speakers—like President Ahmadinejad at Columbia, Mohammed Khatami at Harvard, and the plagiarizing former professor Ward Churchill at Hamilton College, although the last was ultimately cancelled—contribute nothing but the universities?...
