...they arise as a secondary benefit to individuals and the community. To argue that exemption from taxes implies some obligation to provide “secure” jobs would be to argue that other institutions, such as churches, must also hire a certain number of people. This claim is ridiculous, just as is SLAM’s belief that Harvard has a responsibility to create low-level employment opportunities...
After the rallies, Perry downplayed his secession comments, amending them in an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to say, "I'm trying to make the Obama Administration pay attention to the 10th Amendment." The so-called 10th Amendment movement, asserting the rights of the states to claim all powers not granted specifically to the Federal Government, has been grist for conservatives for more than a decade. The movement got a boost following the Democratic return to dominance in Congress and more traction when federal dictates about how to spend stimulus money raised hackles in places like Texas...
...people were busted in Miami on Thursday in a $4.5 million straw buyer scam. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum this month filed a civil lawsuit against a number of alleged loan-modification scam artists on behalf of scores if not hundreds of people, most of them facing foreclosure, who claim they paid upfront fees as high as $3,000 to have their mortgage terms improved so they could keep their homes. Its current annual budget is $12.9 million. MIT athletic officials are currently meeting with student athletes, coaches and interested...
...start of a two-week congressional recess. The lack of lawmakers in Washington muted the outrage that would have exploded had all 535 of them been hanging around the Capitol surrounded by cameras and reporters. Not that that has entirely stopped all the rhetoric, including many critics' bogus claim that Gates is shrinking the overall Defense budget. By canceling the Air Force's prized F-22 fighter, Gates "is willing to sacrifice the lives of American military men and women for the sake of domestic programs favored by President Obama," said Senator Saxby Chambliss, a GOP member of the Armed...
