...were probably right to be a bit hard on Congress. It has held its ground, in this case, against handgun decontrol, but hasn't had the guts to do what's needed: clamp down on all future transfers of handguns whatsoever, just like the machine guns. As I wrote in the December Perspective, we are a big country and we should choose our toys more carefully...

What might have caused an O ring in the right booster to fail? Panelist Feynman demonstrated one possibility at the public hearing by conducting a simple experiment in front of the TV cameras. He placed a small section of a ring in a C-clamp and submerged it in a cup of ice water. Then, removing the section and releasing it from the clamp, he concluded, "The resilience is very much reduced when the temperature is reduced." That fact may be significant, because the booster joints that the O rings are supposed to seal shift under the enormous stresses...

A few hours before the verdict in the junta trial was delivered, the government announced that it had lifted a 60-day state of siege under which constitutional guarantees against arbitrary arrest had been suspended. Alfonsin declared the siege in October to clamp down on an alleged conspiracy by twelve right-wing officers and civilians to disrupt the Nov. 3 congressional elections. The siege ended 15 days ahead of schedule. In that instance, as in so many others, Alfonsin appeared to have moved faster than even some of his supporters had expected...

Bacon utterly rejects this view.
