Sometimes the Israeli government seems to clamp down on information as much out of embarrassment as necessity. That appeared to be the situation in a case disclosed first in the foreign press and then in Israel. It involved a major in the Israeli military-intelligence service who is now on trial for serving as a Syrian agent. The reserve officer is accused of transferring to Syria secrets of Israel's military activities in Lebanon. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison...
Barco, a 40-year public servant whose posts have ranged from mayor of Bogota to Ambassador to Washington, must now confront the Betancur legacy. High on the new President's agenda: the continuing terrorist attacks, growing pressure from the U.S. to clamp down on illicit drug traffic, and a 13.4% unemployment rate. Barco will have to move quickly to contain the proliferating drug business. He has already pledged support for programs to eradicate the coca plant, which provides the raw material for cocaine, and he has indicated to Washington that he will cooperate with efforts to extradite Colombians accused...

What might have caused an O ring in the right booster to fail? Panelist Feynman demonstrated one possibility at the public hearing by conducting a simple experiment in front of the TV cameras. He placed a small section of a ring in a C-clamp and submerged it in a cup of ice water. Then, removing the section and releasing it from the clamp, he concluded, "The resilience is very much reduced when the temperature is reduced." That fact may be significant, because the booster joints that the O rings are supposed to seal shift under the enormous stresses...
...indeed heading in the right direction. A few hours before the verdict in the junta trial was delivered, the government announced that it had lifted a 60-day state of siege under which constitutional guarantees against arbitrary arrest had been suspended. Alfonsin declared the siege in October to clamp down on an alleged conspiracy by twelve right-wing officers and civilians to disrupt the Nov. 3 congressional elections. The siege ended 15 days ahead of schedule. In that instance, as in so many others, Alfonsin appeared to have moved faster than even some of his supporters had expected...
