...many other South Africans, I felt the Kennedy family was a part of my childhood, my teenage years and now my adult life. I have the greatest admiration for their strength of character, their determination, and above all, their kindness to those less fortunate. John Jr. typified the clan. The Kennedys can all lift their heads in pride and say, "Here was a man." VICKY SCHOEMAN Cradock, South Africa...

...routes. Now, with another generation, it is Vardinoyiannis. What is it about Greek shipping tycoons? The breed is conspicuous to Americans as caricature, all pinky rings and suntans, all echoes of Ari and his pals. But as individuals, they somehow remain indistinct, without celebrity, and so a royally scrutinized clan like the Kennedys can visit, take the sweet sea airs, and have opulence and privacy at the same address. If it is not always good to be a Kennedy, the solace can be spectacular...

Her involvement in politics consisted mainly of volunteering for her uncle Ted's campaigns and stumping for local and congressional Democratic candidates. But two years after the family moved to David's home state of Maryland, in 1984, she decided to run for a congressional...

...viewers' kitchens? Minorities are best represented on workplace dramas (ER, NYPD Blue), but sitcoms, which focus more on family and society, tend to be colorless, color blind or awkwardly color conscious. (A rare exception is the wonderfully nuanced relationship between the Hill clan and Laotian next-door neighbors the Souphanousinphones on Fox's King of the Hill.) And if these casting decisions are injurious to minorities, they're insulting to whites, who the networks essentially imply are retrograde racists, years after warming to Jefferson, Huxtable and Urkel. And what if--God help us--they're right...
