...corridors of the United Nations as in the streets of Mogadishu. Without bothering to notify Rome, Kofi Annan, the U.N.'s chief of peacekeeping operations, ordered General Bruno Loi, Italy's military commander in Somalia, to be "rotated back home" for insubordination. Annan denounced Loi for meeting with armed clansmen of Mohammed Farrah Aidid and refusing to carry out orders in the increasingly violent campaign to capture or kill the warlord. "Only the Italian government has the competence to decide who should lead our soldiers," responded Foreign Minister Beniamino Andreatta. The Italians, retorted a U.N. official, should "either...

MOHAMMED FARRAH AIDID can work the crowd as well as any politician. At a demonstration last week in Mogadishu against the U.S.-led air strikes, the United Nations' most-wanted man switched nimbly between martyrdom and angry defiance. Stretching his hands skyward, he led 1,000 clansmen in prayer, urging them to take comfort in Islam. "The U.N. and the U.S. are trying to impose colonial rule on us," he said. ...latest battle was between the predominantly Moslem community of Tripoli (pop. 200,000) and Christians from the mountain town of Zgharta (pop. 12,000) five miles away. It erupted after a seemingly trivial incident: a minor auto accident involving Tripoli and Zgharta drivers. After a Zghartawi was assaulted, armed clansmen threw up a roadblock on the outskirts of Tripoli and halted traffic. When a bus carrying some 25 Moslems reached the roadblock, gunmen herded the passengers into the road. Without warning, a guerrilla opened fire with a submachine gun, slaughtering twelve Moslems...

...sensibly loony scheme by which everyone in the country would get a new middle name and a lot of new relatives chosen arbitrarily by computer. The names would be words like Daffodil, Chromium, and so on, and they would signify clans. Each Daffodil would have 19,999 fellow clansmen spread out around the U.S. to be treated as relatives: to be cared for, cursed, feuded with, borrowed from, nursed, loved and hated. To be taken notice of in a human way is the author's idea, and it is by no means the worst idea put between hard covers...
