Schumann's three Fastasiestucke, Op. 73, were composed for clarinet, but the composer authorized performance by violin or cello. Moye imbues the work with proper impetuosity. Moye has also resurrected a pleasant three-movement Sonata in G Major by the little-known Jean-Baptiste Breval (1756-1825), who published many such pieces in the 1780s...
...hard-bitten merchant seaman and a teen-age bride, began breaking up shortly after Art's birth in suburban Los Angeles (which his mother tried to prevent by aborting herself). Art's lonely upbringing was entrusted to an unloving grandmother. He found an outlet in the clarinet at nine and switched to the saxophone at twelve. He proved such a natural that he was soon jamming around town with musicians like Zoot Sims and Dexter Gordon. At 17 he was married and playing lead alto with Stan Kenton...
...harmless rubble down around the Floyd. "Outside the wall," Waters sings, "the bleeding hearts and the artists make their stand." The Pinkies would presumably find such company untidy, in the first case, or unflattering, in the second. As Waters pipes band and back-up musicians offstage with his clarinet, one recalls with renewed interest the fate of The Godfather's Luca Brasi, who was sent to sleep with the fishes. -Jay Cocks

One hallmark of AACM artists is a fascination with interesting and unusual juxtapositions of instruments, and in the AEC this interest is taken to an extreme. What is even more striking than the sheer multiplicity of instruments is the sensitivity...
...supplication or approach a microphone as if to sing but content himself with making faces at the levice. It is appropriate that the most memorable moments from an AEC concert combine musical and extra-musical elements--Bowie wheeling around to release an arresting snarl, Mitchell picking up his clarinet to play a single note, Jarman filling out the harmony of an ornate fanfare by putting two saxophones to his lips at once. Great Black Music has room for all this and more...
