Surrounding this clash between King and commoner is a whirl of political intrigue. There's a Fergie-like princess with a potentially explosive diary, a royal aide hiding a homosexual affair and assorted political tricksters, both dirty and deadly. Like its predecessor, To Play the King is a wonderfully savvy, supremely cynical picture of real-world politics that makes American efforts in the same vein (JFK: Reckless Youth) look like Saturday-morning cartoons. The next point of tension is a dramatic one which makes a screeching contrast...

...Paul asked Ratzinger to join him in Rome. The Pontiff was turned down -- twice. Finally Ratzinger laid out his conditions. He would come only if he could continue to speak his mind on matters he felt strongly about. If John Paul was ever worried that he and Ratzinger would clash over ideas, that concern has dissipated. "In fact," says Ratzinger, "we do agree completely on all essentials of church doctrine and order. We arrive at the same conclusions, and our differences of approach, where they do exist, stimulate discussion...
