...classroom door swung open barely two minutes after the start of Adelphi University's graduate course in Principles of Marketing. In walked a gray-uniformed functionary who matter-of-factly began punching the tickets of the equally nonchalant students. The scene was purest Marx brothers, and last week it began playing daily on the Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line. The classroom is a converted parlor car, and the students are commuters in one of two new programs to let businessmen take courses as they ride to and from New York City...
Rumbles and Shouts. A special challenge to a commuting student is tardiness: two would-be scholars found that the classroom had left before they got to the station. Still, New York commuters are famous for adaptability, and the 23 who did make it were no exceptions. Not the conductor, the blur of passing towns, sexy billboard advertisements or occasional stops seemed to bother anyone. Professor Desmond Reilly, a moonlighting advertising manager from the Olin Corp., stood in the center of the car. At nine other colleges and universities in the capital and the southern city of Kwangju, the scene was duplicated as troops laid down tear gas and broke classroom doors and windows in pursuit of fleeing students. In all, 1,900 students were packed off to jail; all but 92 "hardcore radicals" were released the same day. At the same time, President Chung Hee Park invoked garrison decree-a step just short of martial law-and shut down...
Malle manages the technical side of his scenario with facility. There are funny moments in the classroom and at home when Laurent and his brothers torment the family maid. Malle, however, seeks to banish the Oedipal shadows that cloud his story by turning almost everything into comedy. Instead of forming an ironic counterpoint to the dark psychology of the story, safe and easy laughter trivializes it, stifling the pain of true recall...
...president of the New York City board of education last week suggested a novel teacher's aid: astrology. At an educational forum, Isaiah E. Robinson said that "if astrology is correct," some classroom problems of misbehavior may be caused by pupils whose birth signs conflict with those of other children, or possibly their teachers'. It may be, Robinson suggested, that teachers should take the planets into consideration to understand the kids better. Presumably, a Taurian heaving erasers at an Aquarian may have his cosmic reasons...
