Smart companies like the French retailer Carrefour reach back to the farmer in his field. "We select the best suppliers and train them to our standards--which pesticides they can use, how much to use and so on," says Nadege Claudel, Carrefour's quality and food-safety manager for China. For produce sold under its in-house brand, Carrefour has replicated its European tracking system, which labels every vegetable with a number that follows it from harvest to shelf--and adds 20% to the price...

...Claudel's two years in China have turned her into an optimist. The pomelos she sources from Fujian, once sold only domestically, are now sold in Europe. "I really believe that things are getting better," she says. China's Agriculture Ministry is working with retailers to build a tracking system so that supermarkets can determine responsibility for contaminated food. But more than 80% of China's vegetables are sold in open markets, where accountability is as perishable as the tomatoes...

...looking for more than the safe, crisp poplin trench coats and soft sleeveless dresses many designers were offering. They wanted to be worked into a lather about something. And eventually they were--by the skinny pants and fancy frills that Nicolas Ghesquière, 34, showed at Balenciaga, the Camille Claudel-like attenuated hourglass silhouettes of Olivier Theyskens at Rochas and John Galliano's surprisingly minimalist nude-chiffon-and-black-lace dresses for Dior. In Paris, at least, the frill is not gone. "We've all been waiting for a definitive moment," said Neiman Marcus fashion director Joan Kaner...

...years during which she completed The Age of Maturity, Claudel struggled ever harder to find a style distinct from Rodin's. Working under the spell of Art Nouveau and Japanese prints, she produced some fascinating small exercises like The Wave, in which a near abstract surf of marble/onyx rises above three capering nudes. But the Detroit show is frank in acknowledging the timidity, repetition and sheer mediocrity of some of her late work. Yet even when she was turning out retrograde sculptural commissions for the Countess de Maigret, who served for a time as her patron, she could not help...

...Claudel, who became increasingly paranoid, produced no new work after 1913, when her family had her committed to a mental hospital. The following year she was transferred to another asylum, where she remained until her death almost three decades later. Rodin would die in 1917, one year after the faithful Beuret, whom he had finally married just weeks before her death. Toward the end he was also still secretly sending money to ensure Claudel's comfort at the asylum. If it wasn't an ideal romance, it was in its way an enduring one, and it left some lasting treasures...
