...best--and best-performed--Latin tune on the album is "Samba for Carmen", which Paquito dedicated to jazz singer Carmen McRae, Drummer Portinho, late of Tania Maria, drives the whole thing as if he were still in the Rio de Janeiro samba school, Padre Miguel, and fellow Brazilian Claudio Roditi, who has the unenviable position of following Paquito in order of solos, still acquits himself quite well on trumpet...
When it was first performed at the end of the 16th century, Much Ado must have seemed as modern as Utopia. The main plot dated back to the Greeks: fair Hero is slandered, then allows her lover Claudio to think she has died. But the subplot, in which Hero's cousin Beatrice and Claudio's friend Benedick talk themselves out of and then into love, served up a sexual set-to whose rapier eloquence has inspired just about every British playwright of manners from Congreve to Coward and beyond. While Hero and Claudio played out their fustian collision...
Beethoven: Violin Concerto (Violinist Gidon Kremer, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Neville Marriner, conductor; Philips). Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2 (Pianist Ivo Pogorelich, Chicago Symphony, Claudio Abbado, conductor; Deutsche Grammophon). The Kremer-Marriner partnership in the Beethoven results in an elegant performance deliberately at odds with the customarily virtuosic way of viewing...
Originally, Maazel had declared that he would not return to Vienna after his contract expired in 1986. With what appeared to be almost gleeful haste, the opera company signed his replacement, precipitating his departure rapido: Italian Claudio Abbado, 50, who finished as music director at Milan's La Scala opera house last month. (Maazel's purely administrative duties have fallen to new General Director Claus Helmut Drese.) To fill Abbado's prized post, La Scala tapped another Italian, Philadelphia Orchestra Conductor Riccardo Muti, 42. In 1982 Muti rejected a similar offer from London's Royal Opera...
Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin; Two Portraits (Deutsche Grammophon). Bartók's bloodcurdling ballet gets an elemental reading from Claudio Abbado and the London Symphony...
