Perhaps what these four records bring out clearest is that avant-garde jazz, far from being a music apart, is one that stems directly out of the jazz tradition. The music makes more radical demands on the listener than earlier forms of jazz, but it also offers proportional rewards. While these records represent an important step towards American recognition of avant-garde jazz, they also ironically underline America's neglect of the music. All four alubms were recorded in Europe and three of the four have been widely available there for several years. Clearly the music deserves better...
...hours a day. Since it is the sores that profit from the sale of Gallo wine, they must make the decision to stop selling it, and when they refuse, it is our job to reach their customers, so that together, we can put economic pressure on the store. The clearest evidence of the kind of support we have gained from customers for the farm workers' struggle is the fact that Harvard Pro. along with Avenue Liquor Mart, and Pappas, the local Gallo distributor, attempted to get a court injunction against the picketing, which they claim has resulted in a large...
...clearest trends was the continuing surge of women competing for major political offices. With two primaries still to go, Democrats and Republicans have already nominated 44 women for Congress (v. 34 in 1972) and three for the Senate. Three women are running for Governor and three for Lieutenant Governor; two years ago, none were nominated for either office...
...MIDDLE EAST. The October war put détente to its clearest test so far. It both failed and succeeded, in that order. According to Article 3 of the "Basic Principles" contained in the original agreement signed in 1972, each side is supposed to do everything in its power "so that conflicts or situations will not arise which could serve to increase international tension." The Russians clearly violated that article by not alerting the U.S. before the outbreak, even though they had advance warnings of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's intentions (see story page 32). Assuming that the Russians would...
...comedies are fair-minded but not very exciting. Herschel Baker's pieces are eloquent though they concentrate on literary influence rather than discussion of character. The essays by Frank Kermode bear all the marks of a penetrating intelligence hamstrung by external restrictions. This sense of containment is clearest in Lear, where Kermode seems to feel required to beg the whole question of literary interpretation and retreat to the view that since Shakespeare's audience was Christian, we can safely assume the play does not mean what it says. Kermode was not so cautious when he edited his brilliant Signet edition...
