Last week New York tipped the national balance against "common law" marriages 2540-23 by legislating them out of existence. Governor Lehman signed a bill which decreed that hereafter no marriage within the State shall be valid unless solemnized by a clergyman or a civil officer. The measure does not disturb those already living in informal wedlock. Its advocates predicted that it would strip "golddiggers" of their strongest weapon in claiming a widow's right in a dead man's estate. Its opponents feared it would work hardship upon ignorant, simple women who thought they were getting married...
Professor Berle is the third member of the Roosevelt campaign "brain trust" to find a berth inside the Administration and like the other two (Assistant Secretary of State Raymond Moley, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Rexford Guy Tugwell) he was drafted from Columbia University. Son of a liberal Boston clergyman, Adolf Berle Jr. arrived at Harvard at the age of 13, was widely publicized as an infant prodigy. He wore knickerbockers about the Yard up to his senior year. Graduated with honors at 17, he took a master's degree. At 21 he received an LL.B. from Harvard Law School...

Todd's most prized possession-his portrait of Jesus Christ...

As a Highlander Baillie-Stewart had been deprived of his Sam Browne belt. Just as the trial commenced a clergyman sprang up from the back benches waving a Bible and shouting...
...little panel reminded Detroiters of medieval church paintings. Detroit's art fight started when some clergymen called the vaccination panel a sacrilegious parody. The Institute's secretary blasted back that anyone who saw the Holy Family in that picture "can see spooks in the dark!" One clergyman found a further slur on Christianity in the Gothic decorations of a commercial radio topped by an adding machine in the Parke, Davis panel. Director Valentiner retorted that the museum had "invested more taxpayers' money in symbols, emblems and decorations of the Christian faith" than in those of any other...
