...grow your own" organs is already upon us, as researchers have sidestepped the stem-cell controversy by making clever use of ordinary cells. Today a machinist in Massachusetts is using his own cells to grow a new thumb after he lost part of his in an accident. A teenager born without half of his chest wall is growing a new cage of bone and cartilage within his chest cavity. Scientists announced last month that bladders, grown from bladder cells in a lab, have been implanted in dogs and are working. Meanwhile, patches of skin, the first "tissue-engineered" organ...
...Kaplan '99 and Gregory G. Lau '99, is impressive. The two seniors create a varied cast of stereotyped characters, from the Italian-American barber/womanizer, Donatello Mywife (Michael Roiff), to the not-so-innocent Washington intern, Stella Virgin (Robert Schlesinger); and the script and lyrics they cowrote are often very clever. On the whole, the show never loses a beat...
Playing by Heart often feels like a high-budget soap opera, with so many characters and thin, unoriginal dialogue. Each relationship is basically stereotypical, with some clever little twists sprinkled in from time to time. There are so many names and details to remember that the director often provides scenes that reiterate redundant plot developments for the less observant or the temporarily narcoleptic viewer. First, there are Paul (Connery) and Hannah (Rowlands), as older married couple experiencing conflict on the eve of the reconfirmation of their wedding vows. Trent (Stewart) is a slick lawyer pursuing Meredith (Anderson), a neurotic theater...
...Candide is not entirely fun and games. While it attacks high learning, the army the aristocracy, government, casinos and law enforcement with clever sarcasm and wit, it also portrays slavery and prostitution with the same humor. It pokes fun at Catholic priests, Jews, New World Indians and others in a racially offensive manner. Some of the characters in particular, such as the Dutch shipmaker Vanderdendur, the New World governor and the Old Lady, rely on stereotypical accents and mannerisms as well. There is also rather graphic scene in which Cunegonde is nearly raped by a soldier. Certainly, there...
Rushmore is quirky and clever enough to work, but its meandering style prevents it from becoming a truly great comedy. The laughs are there, but they are also isolated, and the film fails to build any comic momentum. It is an example of a movie that boasts fantastic scenes but which on the whole is not the most polished or cohesive product. The scene in which Max puts on his play--an adaptation of the gritty Al Pacino cop drama Serpico and a hard-boiled Vietnam epic--are comically brilliant, as is the montage that reveals...
