Like other Arab leaders, Syria's President Hafez Assad acknowledged Sadat's initiative as a clever ploy that would put Israel on the defensive and perhaps even contribute to a straining of the U.S.-Israeli relationship. ...problem is tha Bogdanovich has overblown the whole thing. The scale he uses is far too large, the little that is clever in the script or acting gets swamped, and the acting, singing and dancing aren't good enough to even begin to make...

One may demur at Adapter Tony Harrison's decision to render the entire play in rhyming couplets. While these are agile and clever, they are somewhat distracting to an ear attuned to English prose in the theater. Heurtebise, clad in blue overalls, shuffles around in a loose-ankled, slightly pigeon-toed walk, with his hands clasped tightly against his waist. The unworldly astonishment never fades from his pudgy face. A natty clerk displays an uninspiredly clever knack for his work that his pompous boss lacks, and briefly supplants the others with an act verging on slapstick. Fortunately, he reins the performance in before the proportions of his minor character become too inflated...
