This is where I have to admit that Erich and Max were clever in persisting in what I abandoned. When the first computer games were unveiled, the FRP versions were about as exciting as doorbells. No action. There was, I concluded, no future in this. Especially as I was just discovering the opposite sex. Better roles; better fantasies. Erich and Max, sitting in front of their Apple II computer and its 32 K of memory, just didn't seem headed anywhere I wanted to go as a hormonally drenched 16-year...

...wardrobe, Harry journeys to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on a secret wizard train leaving from downtown London. Though the setting is modern, the basics of Harry's story ring familiar. Rowling's style and sense of humor resemble Roald Dahl's, and her storyline, full of clever twists and characters who are not quite what they seem to be, is at heart a simple tale of good versus evil...

...marketing magic of Artisan Entertainment, the small studio that suddenly isn't so small anymore. (I also think that Dramamine could have made a fortune by handing out samples at movie theatres to solve the rampant nausea.) But the movie itself was trifling --even though that wickedly clever little ending almost redeems the whole exercise (I like the word "exercise" to describe Blair Witch; it gives it that whole unpolished film-school-final-project kind of feel). Ever been caught clumsily trying to close a smutty web page? Well, now you can blame your travels into the Internet's outer reaches on an outbreak of "page-jacking." The Federal Trade Commission reports that a group of clever hackers from Portugal and Australia is co-opting AltaVista searches and rerouting users to pornography sites. When a web user types in a search - "computer games," for example - they are zipped over to a cyber porn site, with little possibility of escape. Victims of the scam report that efforts to use their browser?s Back or Forward keys...

...Paradigm Has Got To Stay," or "Don't Reinvent Our Government, It's Just Fine?" No, Mr. Gore doesn't have that hot button policy which provokes a self-conscious grouping--of course, the real pros in now-departed classes almost certainly could have invented a clever rationale with an alacrity which defied Mr. Gore's apparent inoffensiveness, and brought a slew of letters, banners, and other accoutrements to bear soon after. After all, these were the same stalwarts who found problems with Gro Harlem Brundtland, the Prime Minister of Norway; lesser minds would have passed over that name with...
