Though parts of the play get bogged down, most of the dialogue is incisive and clever. The combination of snappy one-line's from Earl about sex interspersed with old man McMillan's wisdom and expostulations contribute to the crafty exposition and ambiguity that Sibbard weaves throughout the drama. When Jim accuses James and Harry of becoming too uppity, we don't know whether to resent him for destroying his family with pedagogical union philosophy or pity him for living in a world that no longer exists. And, although Earl comes across as little more than an overgrown child...
Such judgments lose much of their potency when delivered by a narrator whose life centers around probing the limits of alcoholism and sexual perversion. Obscenities, apparently varied and clever in the original Russian, flow steadily and unendingly through Limonov's rocky prose. These have been translated with a singular lack of inspiration into either "fuck" or "shit," and serve rather to dull one's sensibilities than to shock them. Likewise, Eddie's staggering feats of drinking become banal with repetition. Thankfully, vodka does not interfere with the lucidity of either his narration or his pain. Although he describes...
...whom death is just the ultimate high. This kinky, doggedly erratic comedy was made in the city by Soviet Émigré Slava Tsukerman in a style that suggests a head-shop fire sale: garishly painted faces, a closeup of a heroin needle doing its dirty work, clever special effects computerized colors bright as an acic dream. Liquid Sky, now playing tc packed houses in a small Manhattan theater, is a two-hour act of imagination undisciplined by talent...
...here, madam, and take a look at this rare collection of 100 paintings. Yessir, these are real beauts, all of them done in the inimitable styles of Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani and other early modern masters. Well, to be honest, not quite inimitable styles. The paintings are actually by a clever Hungarian counterfeiter, Elmyr de Hory. Considered the world's premier art forger before his death in 1976, De Hory fooled even museums with his master-fleeces. Eventually De Hory was so famous that he began signing his "fakes," and many of them have found their way into the hands...
After a while, the emperor wanted a progress report. He sent his ambitious, young director of the Office of Management and Budget, whom he considered both clever and extremely fit for his job. The aide went to the economy room to see how things were going. He was taken aback. He rubbed his eyes and wiped his glasses. Seeing the largest vat of red ink in federal history, he gulped "none of us really understands what's going with these numbers." As he staggered back, he wondered "do you realize the greed coming to the forefront? The hogs are really...
