...role last year as a bitchy TV executive in Network brought Faye Dunaway an Academy Award. Now Faye hopes to click, behind smaller lenses, as a fashion photographer in Eyes. "She's beautiful and representative of the beauty and fashion world that this film is about," says Producer Jon Peters, the former hairdresser who earned his first moviemaker credits with Housemate Barbra Streisand's A Star Is Born. Eyes is now on location in New York, and the producer says he is having more fun than on his first trip to the Big Apple. He was 13 then...

Nothing pussyfooted about the average gang or "click," as some kids like to call it. At the top of the heap is the "prez," who, if he wants to stay there, had better respond to every threat and challenge. The "veep" supervises internal affairs, especially dues and initiation rituals; the "war counselor" plans the "ripoffs" and "gang-hits" and commands the "gestapo" squads, which consist of the enforcers; the "armorer" keeps the weapons functioning in a safe place such as an abandoned building or a girl friend's apartment. ...PALM COURT in New York's Plaza Hotel is a very classy place to stop for tea. Impeccably dressed waiters, who click their heels and stride with the stiff elegance of Russian officers in a Hollywood extravaganza, serve coffee in glistening silver coffeepots. Fragments of blase conversations about grand openings and charity balls and Tiffany diamonds drift above the fronds of potted palms encircling the cozy tables...

...these points are admirably made, but they click into place a little too neatly. The film has an air of premeditation, an almost palpable sense of the film maker's mordant intelligence shaping the scenes. Of course, if you are a director making your first full-length feature, as Jean-Jacques Annaud is here, this is the kind of flaw to have. It certainly does not prevent Annaud from bringing things to a powerfully ironic finish...
