Boating on the Yangtze. One of Tessai's favorites was Sung Dynasty Poet Su Tung-p'o (they shared the same birthday), and Tessai, in his painting Latter Red Cliff Ode, illustrated the poet's description of a night's boating on the Yangtze River near Huang-chou, culminating in the dramatic moment when the poet saw two cranes fly by (later revealed in a dream to have been two Taoist immortals). The painting is now in the ceremonial process of being declared one of Japan's national treasures...

...point or another, Orpheus Descending achieves everything that Tennessee Williams does well and even does uniquely: whiplashing recrimination, harshly funny humor, the corrosive bite of evil, the shaking fingers of fright. Elkins had backing for his story of Schrunk's bribe-taking: Elkins' bookkeeper told the McClellan committee that Cliff Bennett (who refused, without offering legal grounds, to answer questions) had come up $500 short in his accounts and had said, "Well, I gave it to Terry Schrunk." A hat-check girl in the 8212 Club recalled that Bennett, after talking to Schrunk on the night of the raid, asked her for a Manila envelope. ...heavy U.S. pressure, the Dominicans have produced their own explanation for Murphy's disappearance. They say that another airlines pilot, a Dominican named Octavio de la Maza, "committed suicide" last month in a Ciudad Trujillo jail cell after leaving a note confessing he had knocked Murphy off a cliff into shark-infested waters. When the U.S. chargé d'affaires in Ciudad Trujillo implied doubt of their story, by testing the shower pipe from which De la Maza was supposed to have hanged himself, the furious Dominicans complained to Washington...
