It is at its strongest in the organization-minded U.S. Senate, where Old Guardsmen pretty much run things and come-lately Eisenhower Republicans spend their time on the District of Columbia Committee (on the current District Committee: New Jersey's Clifford Case, New York's Jacob Javits, Kentucky's Thruston Morton...

Depression Panacea. Social Credit took its original inspiration from the funny-money theories of Britain's Major Clifford Hugh Douglas, who argued that the state should issue certificates of credit to all citizens, thus provide abundant purchasing power to stimulate and absorb production in a free-enterprise economy. The Social Crediters readily sold their panaceas to the Depression-racked Albertans of 1935. moved to power on a promise to pay every citizen $25 a month. But Social Credit's early efforts to write the Douglas theories into law ran into a formidable legal roadblock; repeatedly, the courts held...

...city's rackets (see PRESS) : Mayor Terry D. Schrunk, 44, longtime (1949-56) Democratic county sheriff until he won the top job with Teamsters' backing last fall. The charges: 1) accepting, while still sheriff, a bribe "in amount unknown" (commonly put at $500) from Teamster-linked Gambler Clifford Bennett during a raid on Bennett's after-hours joint in 1955, and 2) perjury before the grand jury by denying he took the bribe. ...every conspirator named by the Oregonian was facing criminal action. (Langley, who had filed libel suits for $2,000,000 against the Oregonian and several individuals who supported its story, quietly dropped them.) Still the rival Journal stuck to its guns. On Page One it ran an affidavit from Clifford ("Jimmy") Bennett, operator of an Elkins-backed after-hours drinking dive, in which Bennett denied his previous story that he had paid Schrunk $500 protection money in September 1955-the incident on which the indictment was based. Though last week it ran two editorials criticizing Teamster brass, the Journal continued...

...routine character of the acting. Only one of the principals, Danielle Darrieux, as Lady Chatterley, brings some life into the proceedings. Her transition from a cool, self-possessed society woman to the wife of a gamekeeper is, on the whole, credible. Leo Genn, in the part of Sir Clifford, gives a singularly plodding performance and his French always sounds self-conscious and forced. As the gamekeeper, Erno Crisa has the suitable male-animal look about him, but his acting is pretty much confined to flying into plot-induced, if psychologically inexplicable, rages. And director Marc Allegret keeps things moving...
