...dissonance that reflect the brutal realities apparent in much of the music. Listening further, though, you'll realize the same formula is repeated in every song--a few bars of the band, and within seconds, a mellow, whiny voice that enters and builds up to a shrill, screaming climax before dipping back into eerie sounds. The repetition made me wonder if I had listened to all eleven songs, or the same song again and again. Despite these flaws, the sounds of Swimmer are, strangely enough, quite soothing. Something to check out on a lazy, chill afternoon...

...match of wits and a battle of wills that just doesn't quite climax. Despite the chaos and turmoil sparked by their competition, there's just no real feeling of emotion involved. "Cheers" producers Glen Charles and Les Charles have presented an high-concept screenplay that seems inconclusive. The plot is lacking, but it's hard to pinpoint just what exactly it's missing. It's an irreverent look at the prevention of mid-air and mid-life collisions that becomes too predictable...

Then it's a period prison picture, as the stars get framed on a murder rap. Climax in the '70s with an all-male Driving Miss Daisy, and keep on meandering into the '90s as the codgers plan one last adventure. ...manhunt was launched for her creator, an investigation that came to a climax with the arrest of David L. Smith, 30, in Eatontown, N.J. Smith had been tracked down in about as many hours as it took Melissa to make it around the world. The fact that a suspected virus writer got caught was unusual enough. Even stranger were the bedfellows who beat a path to his door: a Boston software entrepreneur, a Swedish student, a deputy state attorney general, the nation's largest Internet service provider, a whole passel of antivirus experts and the FBI. What these sleuths found...

...fact that the fiery climax is a forgone conclusion is just one of the reasons Carrie 2 is largely devoid of suspense or dramatic tension. There is also its tendency to substitute black and white images and spooky lighting for any real frights. Moreover, we don't even really care when the high school jerks finally get what they deserve. The evil jocks and cheerleaders are certainly horrid--for example, the guys think videotaping the girls' derrieres is a productive extracurricular activity--but the antagonists are far too cartoonish to truly be resented...
