With the introduction of more integral characters, most notably John Huston as Evelyn Mulwray's father, the plot keeps thickening before the actual climax, but surprisingly little action takes place in Chinatown. Even when it does, the location seems an afterthought in allegiance to the title. Rather, the name is most likely supposed to evoke the sense of mystery and otherworldliness embodied in the district. Perhaps if the plot did not twist around on itself so intricately, an abstract title would have worked...

From the black baby carriages at the beginning to the giant lumbering snail at the climax, director Franco Dragone peoples the stage with outlandish figures from a Bosch or Robert Wilson dreamscape. They have sad eyes or pinheads or faces on the backs of their heads, or they wander about pensively on stilt legs, passersby in the parade of life. They somnambulate while the acrobats somersault on a trampoline bent up at the ends, as others jump from one vertical pole to another using only leg power...

...biggest deficiency, and it is a serious one, is that Susa never quite delivers the musical climax that the material demands. It is quite canny to stage simultaneously the death of Valmont and his inamorata, Madame de Tourvel, aptly illustrating their bond beyond the grave.
