...Palin that the world was waiting for, at the climax of a media frenzy that Team McCain gleefully fed. Seldom has a candidate arrived for a showdown with curiosity so high and expectations so low. Earlier in the day a phalanx of powerhouse Republican women had gathered to denounce the "outrageous smear campaign" against Palin. They were "enraged," "insulted," "offended" by the questions raised about her qualifications or decision to take on the race while having five kids. Palin rolled right on down the tracks they laid. In a few short days, she said, she had learned that...

...tomorrow night, it won't even be the lead story on the evening news. McCain's vice presidential selection will be. And then McCain will have the luxury of going second - batting last - next week, staging a convention that will, no doubt, lacerate Obama and the Democrats and then climax with McCain telling his incredible life story. By this time next week, Obama's speech will be a distant memory to those of us in the media. By this time two weeks from now, I wouldn't be surprised if John McCain were ahead in the polls...

...Fast and the Furious, this Mummy movie is really two movies: a good adventure epic, with all the Chinese people, and a wan one, with O'Connells and the other the Westerners. Their character motivation is sketchy, their verbal wit scant; at times a scene revs to its climax and, instead of issuing some clever deflating retort, the actor will gaze dumbly into the camera, as if this were a rough cut, with the punch line to be edited in later. To camouflage the dearth of smart dialogue, Fraser and Bello indulge in sheepish smiling and sweet preening; the film...

...logistics of this not-so-merry band gathering their equipment, rehearsing Petit's act and sneaking into the WTC. But the tightrope walk is a letdown; the conspirator who had a movie camera up there on the roof forgot to turn it on. So the big climax - man on very high wire (or should we say dead man walking?) - is pretty thin stuff. This visual paucity reinforces the feeling that we're not looking at, say, Paul Valery's nephew up there on the wire. Petit is not making any kind of "statement." He's in the not entirely dishonorable...
