...individual basis. But they can sometimes best be cured in the company of a group of people with similar problems. That is the opinion of Psychiatrist Herbert Vandervoort, 47, director of the Sex Advisory and Counseling Unit of the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. His clinic in the past two years has been pioneering a program of low-cost sex counseling for mixed groups of as many as 40 people...
Vandervoort and his staff of 24 counselors tackle the full range of sexual woes from premature ejaculation to simple marital boredom. The approach is novel, to say the least. One of the clinic's most controversial innovations is a weekend marathon of sexually explicit education films shown to as many as 20 couples at once. The screening, which includes a few old stag reels (for "historical interest," says Vandervoort), helps reduce anxiety about sexuality while at the same time demonstrating some typical patterns of sexual behavior. Six hours of movies and a lengthy discussion with counselors are enough...
Almost Hysterical. Until she began keeping charts for the Jordan-Levitz clinic, Esther Rich, a 29-year-old Philadelphia housewife, never realized that she ate a little something, usually candy, every two hours. As a remedy, Levitz suggested that she stretch the time between snacks little by little. "The first time I tried it I was almost hysterical," Rich confesses. "I was only able to wait 20 minutes. The second time I distracted myself by calling someone on the telephone." After-dinner snacking in the kitchen was a particular problem. Now Rich washes her dinner dishes in the morning...

For their 20 hour-and-a-half sessions, at which they discuss their eating habits, patients pay a hefty fee of $500, no doubt part of the reason the clinic has had only five dropouts. Despite the dues (which go to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital for obesity research), Jordan and Levitz are booked solid until September and are now planning to train successful patients as lay consultants...
...Drug Administration for widespread application. Thus use of the substance is restricted to certain medical centers that are still investigating its efficacy and safety. But those who have used chymopapain for slipped discs have uniformly reported good results. For example, at Massachusetts General Hospital, which recently opened a clinic to treat back problems, Drs. James Huddleston and Robert Boyd have injected chymopapain into 250 slipped-disc sufferers over the past 2% years. In three-fourths of the cases, they report, both the rupture and the pain were relieved...
