...Hence the cognitive dissonance at hearing a clip from Bruni’s song “Quelqu’un m’a dit” accompanying a scene in the recently released “(500) Days of Summer.” The movie, a fluffy Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle, takes off from an interesting premise: A pretty female protagonist rejects the labels of a straightforward relationship. For all its pretenses at innovation in the form of jump-cuts and non-linear narrative, though, the final product makes no attempt at exploring the motivations behind that stance...
...aces were nearly offset by 11 service errors. The Shockers were far from perfect while serving—the team’s 14 aces were accompanied by 11 service errors—but these faults were negligible. Relative to Harvard’s -.048 attack clip, Wichita State dominated on offense and hit .479 with 38 kills. Shocker Sarah McGee went into an offensive frenzy, knocking down 11 kills while generating an astounding .714 attack percentage. Wichita State posted nine blocks and refused to give one up to Crimson. Overcoming Harvard’s defense, the Shockers enabled themselves...

South of the Border is a near sibling to the Michael Moore docu-comedy Capitalism: A Love Story, which premiered at Venice last night and which looks like a masterpiece of attitudinal moviemaking next to Stone's slapdash effort. Moore appears in a news clip from 2007, lecturing Wolf Blitzer on what the filmmaker saw as CNN's gutless coverage of the U.S. Iraq invasion. Moore and Stone share the notions that capitalism can be predatory and that priests, in the U.S. and Paraguay (where the President is a former Catholic bishop), are all liberation theologians. And in both films...
...Kennedy took John Kerry sailing on his 50-ft. schooner, the Mya.It was a perfect day on the water, sunny with the occasional cotton-ball cloud riding the strong winds over the family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass. With the Mya's blue hull moving at a good clip, Kennedy turned to his old friend with reminiscences of failed campaigns past: Kennedy's bid for the presidency in 1980 and Kerry's in 2004. What concerned Kennedy, who three months earlier had learned he had a malignant brain tumor, was legacy - Kerry's legacy...
