Detroit automakers have found that regular use of the polyisobutylene compounds can occasionally clog small oil passages and cause engine damage. Ray Potter, retired supervisor of fuels and lubricant research at Ford, says: "No one has ever presented any scientific data to prove that additives do anything good." The auto manufacturers do not recommend the use of additives except to deal with some "special problems." The trouble is that the ordinary driver cannot really diagnose those problems...
...Stafford explained to ground controllers that the crew was about to conduct "scientific experiment Sugar Hotel Alpha Victor Echo"-or SHAVE. NASA had spent $5,000 trying unsuccessfully to perfect a small electric razor with a vacuum attachment that would suck up bristles -which otherwise might float freely and clog up instruments in the weightless environment of the spacecraft. The Apollo 10 astronauts had a simpler solution. They broke out a razor and a tube of brushless shaving cream and attacked their week-old beards in the traditional manner. A small gallery has clothes and jewelry--everything from a very uncomfortable pair of clear lucite clog-sandals, to a Medusa-esque necklace of fluorescent acetate strips. More for Christmas giving were the translucent amber boots (vinylite) by Herbert Levine, who supposedly manufactures for I. Miller, and chunky, colorful Plexiglas rings, available at Bonniers. And for would-be travelers, there's a portable polyethylene toilet...
...streams; an antilitter campaign depicts a community overrun by snorting pigs. In the "Give a Damn" campaign for the New York Urban Coalition, a black narrator suggests to white viewers: "Send your kid to a ghetto for the summer. Want to see the pool? C'mon. The kids clog up the sewer with garbage, open a hydrant . . . You don't want your kids to play here this summer? Then don't expect ours...
