...Kelly reminds me of any modern star, it?s George Clooney: a rugged Irish-American, an intense competitor, a man?s man most at ease with other man?s men. That was certainly true of the on-screen Gene, with the manly bonding of "On the Town," "Fair Weather" and "The Three Musketeers." Says Andre Previn, who wrote the "Fair Weather" music: "Gene always did like to have a trio, himself and two other men, two other fellas for him to play off, who could dance and sing - if possible, not quite as well...

...What Kelly had in common with the Kennedys (and not with Clooney) was a compulsion to excel, to write his own history, even if it meant rewriting others?. Turning "On the Town" into a movie, he and his team threw out most of Leonard Bernstein?s Broadway score. More daring was Kelly?s decision to restage the Jerome Robbins ballet that is at the heart of (and was the inspiration for) the original show. Darn it, he?d do his own darn ballet. There's a lovely moment when charming ex-con Danny Ocean (George Clooney) quizzes his ex (Julia Roberts) about her new beau. "Does he make you laugh like I did?" he asks, and she douses the flame by replying, "He doesn't make me cry like you did." Other than that, this remake of the 1960 Rat Pack caper doesn't offer much. The stars, including Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, hit their marks and smile a lot. The ending hints at a sequel (Ocean's 12? Ocean's 22?), but you've seen this one. Rent a video...
