...essays, he reveals his findings. "There will always be an ineluctable mystery concerning the origin of the theory of natural selection, just as there will always be a shadowy web surrounding the real Charles Darwin," writes Eiseley. But as anyone who reads his book will realize, Eiseley has come closer than anyone else to solving that mystery and breaking that web. In graceful, occasionally poetic prose, he shows how Darwin, who was initially timid about advancing his theory, was almost beaten into print by Alfred Russel Wallace, a younger, all but unknown researcher. After discussion, the two agreed to announce...

...Cooder: Bop Till You Drop (Warner Bros.). His musical excursions have carried him from Hawaii to the Tex-Mex border, but this time out Cooder stays closer to the mainstream, floating lightly through the fast, cool and sometimes stormy currents of rhythm and blues. The album's nine songs include one co-written by Cooder and eight other tunes, which, if not classics already, will surely...

Then it moved on to Ganymede, photographing a tortured, cratered sphere whose cracked and faulted icy crust may indicate moonquakes. It took a closer look at Europa, which revealed an intricate lattice work of veinlike lines that may represent shallow fissures in an icy sea. Finally, Voyager 2 shifted its electronic gaze to lo, the innermost and most spectacular of the Galilean moons. Four months ago, Voyager 1 had spotted eight volcanoes in the midst of eruption, the first time such activity was observed other than on earth. Many women are so physically scarred that they lose interest in sex. While official Soviet statistics say that only 18% of Russian women are frigid, Stern is convinced by his researches that the figure is closer to 45%. Nor is much help available for these women; sex therapy clinics are nonexistent. Women must turn to sympathetic doctors like Stern or to one or two available government manuals that are about as informative as the hygiene texts once used in U.S. junior high schools. One 1974 Soviet sex guide, for example, recommends mineral water douches and vacations in warm climes...
