...effort to get away from Watergate and turn to what Nixon calls "the people's business," but it is also a recognition that the people's business has gone badly in recent months. Whatever their worry about Watergate, Americans are even more concerned about plagues that are closer to home: runaway inflation, food and power shortages and the general state of economic uncertainty...
...terror. Bottle-and coin-toss games offer stuffed animals, drinking glasses and table lamps as prizes. Off to the side, barkers bellow the fascinations of a 500 look at the three-legged man, the two-headed baby and the incredible snake girl. And the burlesque show: "Come on in closer, folks. Their case was weakened by unrelated but embarrassingly timed indictments handed down by a federal grand jury, charging U.S. Steel, Bethlehem, Armco...
...relations with Congress, which has long chafed over the fact that Kissinger has been immune to legislators' questions. When Nixon announced the nomination at his press conference last week, he emphasized that Kissinger would stay on as his personal adviser in order to achieve "a closer coordination between the White House and the departments." Kissinger will therefore have offices in both places-and greater powers than any Secretary since John Foster Dulles. At his own press conference the next day, Kissinger sought to allay any suspicions that he might try to take advantage of his dual position to avoid...
