Given the often prickly state of U.S.Canadian relations during the past decade, the Reagan Administration has been careful to appear evenhanded about the race. Mulroney may be somewhat closer to Reagan on defense and economic issues, but Turner has good friends in Washington, most notably U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, who was president of Bechtel Corp. when Turner was a director of Bechtel Canada Ltd. After Reagan's highly publicized squabbles with Trudeau, the prevailing feeling in the Administration seems to be that "whoever wins, we win." U.S. officials contend that despite disputes over trade barriers, U.S. investment...

...Americans opened the Games against the Chinese, who lost 97-49 and seemed baffled by American-style play; when Ewing made a leaping block of a shot, China's Haibo Wang bolted as if he had glimpsed an evil spirit. ...deal that could have been made only in the political otherworld of the two Germanys: deutsche marks in exchange for closer ties between people. The government of West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl last week approved backing for a private bank loan of more than $330 million to East Germany, the second time in two years that Bonn has guaranteed such a deal. In the language of diplomacy, the loan carried no conditions. But in the world of Realpolitik there were clear requirements, and it came as no surprise when the West German government also announced that East Germany will ease...
