...typical Clinton style, the president angered both homosexuals and military bigots with a don't-ask-don't-even-think-about-it "compromise" that keeps gays in the closet but gives them a peephole. In a policy consistent with the inconsistency that has become a military trademark, homosexual soldiers will be allowed to tell people they're gay, as long as they then can prove they were only kidding...

Nothing remains anti-taste for long. Just as some new art (not all) starts ugly and becomes beautiful, so works of art that begin their career surrounded by announcements of a new start, a radical primitivism, tend to find a level where -- surprise! -- their ancestors emerge from the closet. So it is with Dubuffet, who never ceased to insist that he was kicking free from the conventions of Western culture, starting with the idea of beauty itself. Yet his attachment to rural images from earlier French art, particularly the earthy fields of Millet, is pervasive and obvious; some...

...musical was drowned out by the brass of Funny Girl and the percussion of Hello, Dolly! -- not to mention star turns by Bea Lillie in High Spirits, Bert Lahr in Foxy and Bob Fosse in Pal Joey. During the decades since, She Loves Me has become a closet favorite of theater insiders. At last, the cognoscenti have let the rest of the world in on the secret. A perfect revival opened last week, a 2 1/2-hour nonstop smile punctuated by laughter and a lacing of sentimental tears...

Look for a major compromise this week on the issue of gays in the military. Sources at the Pentagon say Defense Secretary Les Aspin will bring President Clinton a proposal that will allow in-the-closet gays to serve, with some leeway for letting their orientation be known. This would be a more tolerant version of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy favored by Senator Sam Nunn. Aspin is close to persuading Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to sign on to his proposal, which would almost certainly make the policy acceptable to Nunn...
