...Abakanowicz's hallmark figures, molded from resin-stiffened burlap. Headless and repetitious, they look "expressionist" but aren't: their true ancestors are ancient kouroi and Egyptian scribes planted on their plinths. It is amazing to see how much inward dignity Abakanowicz can give to a human figure made of cloth, and how many subtle variations she can infuse into a whole row of them. They are funereal: the wrinkled burlap reminds you of mummified skin. When Abakanowicz lines up 10, 20 or 30 more or less identical figures, as in Infantes, 1992, you think of prison lines and victims...
This production of The Sea of Lost Time has many other notable touches. The witty and effective music ranges from tropical so flamenco to a guitar rendition of "La Vie en Rose." The use of textile props, from a net hammock to a trailing length of purple cloth, is splendidly handled...
...Homo Querulosus--This species is also known as the Protester. A common misconception is that for each cause, there is a different species. Conversely, they are never so lost, dejected, and confused as when they get what they want. Rather than suffer from such a fate...

Having worked for the Nixon campaign, he argued in The Emerging Republican Majority that Republicans would come to dominate presidential politics by bashing the liberal Establishment and praising middle-class, church-going, penny-pinching, cloth coat-wearing values...
Rothenberg did her first horse, a pallid and watery sketch, in 1973, and it is hard nowadays to remember what an unyielding prejudice against any kind of hand-painted figuration existed in New York 20 years ago. Abstract art -- in particular its last whole-cloth style, Minimalism -- had done away with all that. It had also shaped artists' expectations about format: split and abutted canvases, "primary" X shapes, the whole pictorial rhetoric of the canvas as object...
