...Despite its status as only a partial eclipse in Hong Kong, people ooh-ed, aah-ed, clapped, and sighed with every rogue movement of a cloud or surreptitious inching forward of the moon. It was a show with no language and no tickets. I imagined, across the strip of land that was experiencing total eclipse, people turning in unison as the sky went dark and the sun billowed out at them around a deep black hole. There may be nothing tangible that can unite every person across that strip of land from Varanasi to Shanghai except, perhaps, the fact that...
...Dodd’s political health deteriorate? He caught Connecticutitis. When you spend 27 years in the Senate, presidential ambitions cloud your mind. You move to Iowa and win zero delegates in the primary. Then, you get sloppy. You wait 193 days to disclose documents about your cheap mortgage from Countrywide Financial, which you oversee on the Banking Committee. And you scold American International Group, a donor to your campaign, for paying bonuses with taxpayers’ money, before admitting that you loosened the loophole...
...this process will continue in the future, as the world keeps warming. Scientists create climate models to try to predict how the earth will respond to higher levels of greenhouse-gas emissions, but only one model - created by the Hadley Centre in Britain - includes the possible impact of changing cloud behavior. And the bad news is that the Hadley model contains particularly high temperature increases for the 21st century, in part because it sees dissipating cloud cover as a positive-feedback cycle - meaning the warmer it gets, the less cloud cover there will be, which will further warm the earth...
...Cloud cover is only one element of climate sensitivity. Scientists are also concerned about the earth's ice, which reflects sunlight back into space, making it a cooling factor, while seawater absorbs the sun's heat. That means that as polar sea ice melts because of warming, leaving more open water, the warming process could accelerate - which would then melt more ice. There are also concerns that as the permafrost in the Arctic thaws, it could release massive amounts of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that would further accelerate warming...
...personally assured Bush early on that his aide wasn't involved, even persuading the President to exonerate Libby publicly through a spokesman. Special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, who prosecuted the case, said Libby's obstruction had prevented investigators from uncovering the truth about Cheney's role. "There is a cloud over the Vice President," Fitzgerald said in his closing arguments. (Matthew Cooper, then a TIME correspondent, was a witness in the case against Libby. Cooper had spoken to both Libby and Bush aide Karl Rove in July 2003 about Wilson's relationship to Plame. Time Inc. turned Cooper's notes over...
