Kohoutek probably originated far beyond the outermost planet, where billions of comets are believed to orbit the sun. They were apparently born out of the same cloud of interstellar dust and gas that created the sun and the planets some 4.6 billion years ago, and have remained largely unchanged since. Occasionally, the tug of a nearby star pulls a comet into a far more elongated orbit, bringing it closer to the sun and making it visible from earth. Thus, as Kohoutek approaches, astronomers will have a rare opportunity to learn more about the primordial stuff out of which the solar...
...rare events, taking place every 50 or hundred years in galaxies similar to the earth's Milky Way galaxy. When one occurs, it gives off more light than all of the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined. It is thought to leave behind a glowing, expanding cloud of gases at the center of which is a small, rapidly spinning, incredibly dense neutron star (or pulsar) that gives off regularly spaced radio signals. Only four supernovas have been recorded in the Milky Way galaxy since the year 1000. The best-known one was witnessed by Chinese astronomers...
...days are past when great Victorian music is ignored solely because of a subjective reaction. There is mediocre music to be found in any period; the weaker should not cloud our appreciation of the better parts. A few pieces survived the turn of the century such as Stainer's great Passion-setting, The Crucifixion. Yet so much was lost and continues to be ignored. EMI has created a legitimate milestone in its two releases of the serious Sullivan. Though the Symphony is more for an historian's taste, the incidental music might well grace any good record collection. Far more...
...would also make it appear that he was short-circuiting the legal system and prejudging Agnew as guilty. Agnew could continue to carry out his constitutional duty of presiding over the Senate, but he rarely does so now and probably would not appear in the chamber under such a cloud. At the same time, impeachment would be improbable once trial had begun, and the situation would end only when a court had rendered its verdict on the criminal charges...
...slack and derivative. Its main inspiration is Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde, both in its ideas (outlaws as folk heroes, mythic celebrity as the ultimate reward of the criminal life) and its images (bloody faces pressed against car wind shields, lovers in a field shaded by a cloud passing briefly across the sun). But Bonnie and Clyde's humor, excitement and sense of fatefulness are woefully absent. Milius, who also wrote the script, creates no real characters, only targets. He has two surpassing leading actors: Warren Gates as Dillinger and Ben Johnson...
