...their worst in violent bursts and spasms. Droughts are different. They have no discernible beginning; no one wakes up of a morning, looks out a window and says, "Uh-oh, here comes a long dry spell." Droughts seem deceptively serene, no more threatening than an endless expanse of blue, cloudless sky. They unfold in slow motion, a tempo ill suited to daily headlines and TV-news reports. Covering one is like sitting around watching the grass not grow. In The Grapes of Wrath, his 1939 novel about the Depression-era Dust Bowl, John Steinbeck captured the idling, hallucinatory rhythm...
...here they were on a fine October morning in Winterset, Iowa-cloudless sky, heatless sun, a soft breeze rustling leaves that had turned to perfectly photogenic reds and golds. Beresford was gone; Streep was present; Eastwood was directing as well as co-starring; the script was finally right and so was today's pretty location, through which an aged Francesca was supposed to wander distraught (she has just learned that her long-ago three-day lover has died). ...Debbie's still cute. Her audiences, with hair the color of a cloudless Vegas sky, may come to the show thinking, as she jokes, "We're gonna go see Debbie before she dies." Official estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture put the corn crop at 9.6 billion bushels, up a staggering 52% over last year's flood-ravaged crop of 6.3 billion. As the sun rose day after day in mild, cloudless skies only to be followed by soft, moon-washed nights, the private estimates have climbed even higher, to 10 billion bushels, about 500 million beyond the old record set in 1992. Add to this overflow 2.5 billion bushels of soybeans -- almost 240 million more than the historic crop of 1979. And when cotton, rice and a hefty 2.3 billion bushels...
...Sunday morning, the Crimson awoke to find a cloudless sky and a pumped-up George Mason team rarin' for an upset. George Mason, like Holy Cross the day before, dominated the game offensively, but somehow, again, the Crimson managed to come out on top on the scoreboard...
