When shooting commenced in 2001, Metallica--drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and singer James Hetfield--was starting a new album, dealing with the resignation of bassist Jason Newsted and entering therapy with performance-enhancement coach Phil Towle.
