...presidency. Target of the salvo: the defense reorganization bill unanimously reported out by "Uncle Carl" Vinson's House Armed Services Committee. When he first laid eyes on the committee's draft in mid-May, the President dubbed it "progress." But close analysis showed that three Vinson & Co. provisions sliced deep into the substance of the Administration's painstakingly thought-out proposal (TIME, April 14). Ike did a slow burn, then burst out with a ringing summons to the House to override its own Armed Services Committee. Charged...

Sole Jurisdiction. In 1952 Paul S. Russell, a nonunion electrician from Decatur, Ala., filed suit against the United Auto Workers for $50,000 damages. He charged that U.A.W. picket lines prevented him from driving to work at Decatur's Wolverine Tube Division of Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co. plant, sued for five weeks' wages and punitive damages. On the evening of March 12, when Author (The Era of Trujillo) Galindez waved goodbye to a student in front of a New York subway entrance and then vanished, Gerry Murphy, a onetime Eagle Scout from Eugene, Ore., was waiting at out-of-the-way Zahns Airport near Amityville, L.I., his rented twin-engined Beechcraft D18 outfitted with extra gas tanks and ready to go. Ernst checked out Murphy...

Bluidie Bleckguaird. Until recently, the Lallans dialect was used chiefly by Young and his co-secessionists for pastoral poetry, "flytin," i.e., jousting in libelous verse. Then a classics student at St. Andrews University, where Young has taught for ten years, asked him to do a translation for a dramatics group. The play: Aristophanes' The Frogs, which, because it is less scabrous than most other Greek comedies, is the one most often served up in freshman courses. But even mild Aristophanes is as ripe as Roquefort, and scholars' English translations tend toward the tepid. Young's translation...
