University and Freshman crews had their first long workout of the season yesterday, rowing downstream for a considerable distance below the Cottage Farm Bridge. Coach Haines devoted his attention to the two upper crews of each squad, following the shells in the Pup I, which was launched yesterday. Though smooth rowing was rendered difficult by numerous cakes of floating ice, Coach Haines was satisfied with the workout, declaring that the University eight showed excellent form for only the third time on the water. Five of the lower boats, made up principally of green men, rowed from Weld under the direction...
Robert Ellsworth Gross '19, of Newton, was appointed acting captain of the University nine by Coach Duffy yesterday. Gross played regularly in the outfield on the 1919 Freshman team two years ago, and was a candidate for the University nine last spring. University oarsmen had their first workout on the Charles River yesterday, when two of Coach Brown's crews, the fourth Freshman and a mixed University and Freshman shell had a limited row from Weld up and down the short stretch of open water below the Anderson Bridge. However, two more shells will take to the water today. It is expected that by next Monday, when the Newell Boathouse...

An already strong infield of L. P. Jones '19, J. B. Wolverton '20 and R. E. Gross '19, at first, second and shortstop, respectively...
...crew squads have appreciably increased in numbers during the past week, there now being 16 full crews at work in the tank and on the machines. Coach Haines has charge of the first three University and first four 1921 boats in the tank, while Coach Brown supervises the remaining crews in their workouts on the machines at the Locker Building. From now on, Graduate Coach Arthur E. Beane '11 will be on hand regularly to assist Coach Haines, and will have supervision of the Freshman squad as in former years...
