...Bush administration has the answer in a regime that will build character, strengthen the adolescent back and help America climb out of its crippling energy crisis. As the Vice President pointed out in his 170 page report of the National Energy Policy Development Group, America's appetite for coal, oil and nuclear power will require production of a new power plant each week for the next 20 years. That means we need to get going. Now, that's a lot of pipes that need welding. So the question you've got to be asking yourselves...

...plan called for the construction of 1,300 power plants in the next 20 years - about one a week is the catchy statistic - but it also envisions 90 percent of those plants will be natural-gas-fired, the cleanest mainstream power source around. Yes, the Administration is more coal-fired-up than even the mildest environmentalist, but the only money the White House wants to actually spend on coal is $2 billion to make it burn cleaner. And yes, Dick Cheney isn't afraid of nukes. But Republican pollsters are telling Bush the public isn't either...

Of course, the company would still have to find a place in the U.S. to put it. Many homeowners would sooner burn coal in their own fireplace than live next to a reactor. So rather than try to find converts, the industry hopes to construct new facilities on existing sites, in communities that already depend on plants for jobs...

...drive off into the wide open spaces. Mass transit is for pointy-headed Easterners, and every room should be as cool as a meat locker. Don't have enough energy? Drill for it like a crazed dentist. If that doesn't do the trick, let's blast for coal and rebuild Three Mile Island. These are people from out West, where there's land, lots of land under sunny skies above, and no one will be fenced in by $3-a-gal. gas. You may recognize the type. They're in charge...

...particular - "conservation may be a sign of personal virtue, but it is not a sufficient basis for a sound, comprehensive energy policy" - led to a wave of bad press and gave the administration's critics fresh ammunition to dismiss the plan as a sop to the oil, gas and coal industries. That characterization may have been an over-reaction, say critics, but why bait the enemy? Cheney's speech, says a senior administration official, "took a punch when it didn't need...
