...Brown's Plan B is winding down our dependence on coal - the carbon-heavy fuel that the people over at the environmental website Grist like to refer to as "the enemy of the human race." Right now the world is on pace to build hundreds of new coal power plants over the coming decades, adding vast amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and if that happens the fight against global warming is as good as lost. Brown argues that rapid action to improve energy efficiency, develop renewable sources of power and expand the Earth's forest cover could reduce...

...clear what issues, if any, will stir Wyoming's G.O.P. primary votes. At the G.O.P. presidential forum in Casper, candidate proclamations of gun-owner rights drew standing ovations, and loud applause rewarded statements urging continued development and use of fossil fuels - a big issue for a state booming with coal mining, oil and natural-gas drilling. Larimer says immigration is a major issue in the state, surpassing the Iraq war. "People want to close the borders," she says. But retired Wyoming U.S. Senator Alan K. Simpson believes that, though "immigration has been a federal failure of will...

That doesn't mean we are powerless. There are steps we can take now: adopting combined heat-and-power systems; switching from coal to natural gas; embracing renewable and nuclear energy; and favoring more fuel-efficient and hybrid vehicles. In addition, we can reduce and offset up to 20% of our emissions by conserving and restoring the world's forests. Forests not only store twice as much carbon as there is in the atmosphere, but constantly reabsorb it through photosynthesis. Nature's carbon-storage technology is extraordinarily efficient and can mitigate climate change better over the next 50 years than...

Children in and around Boston can hope to receive more than just a lump of coal in their stockings this year thanks to the Phillips Brooks House (PBH) annual Holiday Gift Drive. The drive, which aims to collect over 1,000 gifts, began yesterday when PBH staff placed collection boxes across campus at prime spots including Memorial Church and the Freshman Dean’s Office. The two-week drive will end on Dec. 14, when the boxes will be collected and sorted, and eventually distributed to various non-profit organizations around Boston. “This drive plays...

...therefore need a global agreement on new rules of the game to take carbon emissions out of our energy system. Part of the answer will be akin to the smokestack scrubbers. Engineers have shown that it is possible to capture the carbon dioxide before it is emitted from a coal-fired power plant, and to transport it to long-term underground storage, in a process known as "carbon capture and sequestration." They've also dramatically reduced the costs of non-fossil-fuel electricity from wind, solar power and geothermal power, with further savings achievable based on experience and more research...
