...thing: it's pronounced rat-a-tooey and refers to a Mediterranean vegetable stew, which not everyone will know or, knowing, will care about. And then ... well ... rats. They are typically figures of fear and loathing, and the Bird team hasn't prettied them up. Though Remy's coat has a lovely bluish sheen, and he often walks on his two hind paws, he is recognizably a rat, much closer to his species than a certain Disney mouse--with red pants, white gloves and yellow shoes--is to his. ...hospital is standing in for Myers' fictional Midwestern sanitarium, with the help of some barbed wire and fake autumn leaves. Members of the laid-back cast wear bathrobes and play pretty convincing nut cases. But occasionally, an impeccably groomed and attractive person in a lab coat strolls by. It is only when McSteamy, a.k.a. actor Eric Dane, passes through that it becomes clear Halloween is sharing turf with the cast of Grey's Anatomy, also filming at the VA hospital that day. This is a classic L.A. moment, in which fictional doctors from two different media and vastly different genres...

Chabon's prose is so awesome, it's a crime not to quote it. "Look at Landsman," he writes, "one shirttail hanging out, snow-dusted porkpie knocked to the left, coat hooked to a thumb over his shoulder. Hanging on to a sky-blue cafeteria ticket as if it's the strap keeping him on his feet." There's hardly a mot here that's not juste. Likewise, a cartoon dog evokes "the obscure unease that Pluto has always inspired, a dog owned by a mouse, daily confronted with the mutational horror of Goofy...
