...Henri Bendel in New York City points out, "are not '60s redos. Those clothes were skimpier and skinnier." Sprouse's lines tend to be a little more careful and deliberate, even sculpted, and a lot of his wizardry comes in combinations, like throwing a man-size coat over a mini. Says Pat Henderson of Bergdorf Goodman: "I've got one of his bright pink wool tank dresses, real short. You take off your coat and show that dress, anything could happen. Men think the clothes are incredibly sexy...

Rooting out financial-disclosure fraud has become the top priority of SEC Chairman John Shad this year. The federal agency is coming down hard on companies that sugar-coat their earnings reports to give stockholders an artificially sweetened idea of corporate performance. Says Shad: "Some companies try to hide the bad news." So far this year the SEC has brought lawsuits against 25 firms for cooking the books, compared with 23 in all of 1983. ...Listen to Bombeck, who wanted to give her kids the secure childhood she had missed: "I was overwhelmed. You get from your mother what things should be. I'm killing myself. We all did. Are you ready for this? I'm sitting there at midnight bending a coat hanger, putting nose tissue on it to make a Christmas wreath for the door. You know what it looks like? It looks like a coat hanger with tissue that is going to melt when it rains. It's a desperation you cannot imagine. I had a husband who worked...
