...stations are fixed arid if the cable can carry a wide enough frequency band. Such an arrange ment enables the cable-carried waves to be fortified by amplifiers at intervals along the route, minimizes tonal losses due to static and fading. Such a cable is the famed coaxial cable developed by American Telephone & Telegraph Co.'s research subsidiary, Bell Telephone Laboratories...

Pipe. Promise of solving the distance problem lies in the "coaxial cable" developed by the Bell Telephone Laboratories of American Telephone & Telegraph Co. Consisting essentially of a pair of copper tubes with a bare wire running through the centre of each, this cable can transmit 240 telephone messages or 20 to 40 telegrams simultaneously and was primarily designed for such purposes. But it can also handle a radio frequency band 1,000,000 cycles wide-enough to carry the fluctuating light & shadow of television. The possibility therefore arose of "piping" television from city to city underground. A. T. & T. applied...

...bright promise of solving the distance problem, however, appeared when American Telephone & Telegraph Co.'s experimental laboratories produced the coaxial cable. This consists essentially of two hollow copper tubes with a slender copper wire running through the centre of each, the whole insulated and sheathed in a lead case. Developed primarily as a telephone improvement (it transmits 240 messages simultaneously), it can also handle a frequency band 1,000,000 cycles wide, is able thus to transmit the fluctuating lights & shadows of television. With this cable it would be possible to "pipe" a televised program all over...
