Pioneered by Biologists Aaron Moscona of the University of Chicago and Malcolm Steinberg of Princeton, the technique is deceptively simple. After taking tissue from the fetus of, say, an unborn mouse, researchers coax the individual cells apart with the help of enzymes and then put the separated cells into a growth-sustaining solution. Carefully incubated, the mix soon displays extraordinary activity. The cells begin to join and organize themselves into a pattern resembling the original tissue...

...free. A Mujib imprisoned, Bhutto evidently decided, was of no real benefit to Pakistan; a Mujib dead and martyred would only have deepened the East Bengalis' hatred of their former countrymen. But a Mujib allowed to return to his rejoicing people might perhaps be used to coax Bangladesh into forming some sort of loose association with Pakistan...

Whether the specific data and research projects in the funding proposal reflected the intention of the Project's framers or an attempt to coax funds from the DOD is comparatively insignificant. Suspecting that these cancer cells contained viruses, the researchers tried to coax them out of the tissue with radiation, cancer-producing chemicals and even exposure to other viruses. These efforts proved unsuccessful...

From New York, Julius Rudel tried to coax Beverly back to work with chatty "Dear Bubbela" letters. Finally he wrote more formally, pointing out that she still had a contract. "I told her to go back," says Peter. "I said it would be good therapy." Reluctantly, Beverly complied. Muffy was making progress anyway, learning to lip-read and talk. Bucky, however, was a hopeless case. When he was six, Beverly made the excruciating decision to put him in the same institution in Massachusetts where Peter's retarded daughter was already lodged. On the same day, she sang all three heroines...
